Patti Smith is an American poet, singer, artist, author, and photographer, best known for her influence on the 1970s punk rock scene. Beyond her contributions to music and literature, Smith became a style icon of the decade, widely recognized for her androgynous look.

In her memoir “Just Kids”, Smith vividly recounts how she put together her outfits for various occasions. With limited funds, she often turned to the Salvation Army, selecting second-hand designer pieces. Drawing inspiration from her personal idols, she deliberately defied conventional women’s fashion of the time.

Years later, she would find herself wearing designers like Alexander McQueen and Ann Demeulemeester — she even modeled for the latter during the FW 2007 ready-to-wear show. Despite now being granted access to luxury fashion, Smith has remained true to her distinctive androgynous style.
