50s conservatism meets Prada excellence — Prada FW 2010 ready-to-wear collection

In this collection, 50s conservatism meets Prada excellence. For her FW 2010 ready-to-wear show, Prada fused traditional silhouettes of the decade with some bold cuts and playful details.

Prada was never into extremely sexual or provocative designs. Her clothing is always heavily rooted in reality and in what women would want to wear. Yet, she loves to subvert traditional styles by playing with the details. In this collection, she decided to revisit her classics from the nineties — “normal clothes”, as she said herself backstage.

These normal clothes are manipulated, adding humor to otherwise-solemn looks. This way, high-neck A-line dresses feature cuts just underneath the breasts, exposing the ribcage. Some necklines feature ruffles that highlight the breasts, meanwhile some looks are belted to accentuate the waist — body parts that women typically seek to place emphasis on with their clothes.

With that in mind, Prada focuses on these details, while keeping the overall looks far from overtly erotic. They remain tastefully playful, leaving more up to the imagination, especially as the styling combines heavy wool stockings or gloves that reveal very little of the models’ skin.

Perhaps, this is the quiet rebellion that Prada imagines to have occurred in the 50s in women’s fashion — not an outright abandonment of conservative silhouettes, yet a slow departure from them. A gradual testing of the unknown waters.
