Are we bringing 2006 back into fashion?

Considering fashion lovers’ extensive affair with the late 90s and early 2000s, it is only natural that at some point, we will look at other iconic fashion eras beyond those years…

One of my observations over the past year has been the fact that we are not ready for 2010s yet. Despite the extensive debate about the return of 2010s styles, few are willing to adopt skinny jeans and wedge sneakers back into their rotation.

And that’s the issue with most trend predictions — treating trends as antitheses of each other, rather than a spectrum.

The waning popularity of baggy and wide trouser styles does not mean that people will suddenly plummet head-first into skinny jeans. Instead, they are more likely to seek out transitional styles; in the case of jeans, that would be considering straight or bootcut styles.

This is how we find ourselves in a transitional period between fashion eras. Despite their iconic elements, we can see late 90s and early 2000s giving way for a new era that we can explore — the late 2000s and more notably, the year 2006 in fashion.

This year brought a fresh approach to fashion in its combination of late 90s minimalism and early 2000s eclecticism. Although the runways present us with a variety of maximalist designs, wild patterns, and bohemian influences, their execution seems a lot more composed and mature.

Perhaps, 2006 is a more realistic direction for fashion; one which is familiar, but also novel enough for us to draw new elements and iconic styles from.
