Deep dive & review: Miu Miu SS2009 ready-to-wear show

One of the magical things, which I find so important in fashion, is its ability to tell stories, while referencing various historical periods.

And this is exactly what we see in Miu Miu’s SS2009 ready-to-wear collection, with its references to the Roman times.

The set-up of this show was reminiscent of a gallery or a museum, with portraits adorning the walls of an 18th century mansion and models presented in printed garments that looked like Roman tiles.

This is not to say that the overall atmosphere of the show was that of a museum showcasing antique exhibits, as several garments were spray-painted in bold, contrasting colors, adding an air of that Miu Miu playfulness that we all love.

Miuccia, who fears not experimenting with typically-plebeian materials, in this show presents dresses and accessories made of burlap. This material, in fact, is yet another reference, as soldiers’ uniforms during the Roman times would be partially crafted of burlap.

The simplicity of the silhouettes is really what makes all the prints and different materials shine in this show, allowing these classic styles to be reimagined in new ways.
