The clash of technology and humanity in Jean Paul Gaultier’s FW 1995 collection

As the 20th century drew to a close, many fashion designers contemplated the future in their collections… and this designer was not an exception.

For his FW 1995 ready-to-wear collection, Jean Paul Gaultier mused on the notion of “Cyber” — the clash of technology and humanity that remains relevant to this day, as we enter the age of AI.

This was reflected in the motifs of the garments and the technology of their production. Notable looks include dot-printed bodysuits, that used digital technology to achieve the gradient colours. Some other models walked in bright acid colours, or robot-like amors that echoed the tech inspirations behind the show.

Several garments featured colourful comic print, featuring illustrations about superheroes battling monsters and villains. This plays into the futuristic theme of the show, referencing typical sci-fi tropes in popular superhero stories.

Unlike other brands that envisioned a more minimalist and utilitarian version of the future, Gaultier presents his vision in a very recognisable, maximalist manner that he’s so adored for. Even the show itself pushes the limits of theatrics in fashion, as it was opened by a model on a motorcycle, clad in black leather.

It is for this reason that we love Jean Paul Gaultier — and why FW 1995 remains one of his most iconic collections to this day.
