An ode to futurism in Prada’s FW 2014 collection
This collection draws heavily from futurism and Art Deco movements of the early 20th century, featuring geometric prints and strict lines.
⠀
For the Prada FW 2014 collection, Miuccia Prada drew inspiration not only from 1920s sci-film “Metropolis”, but also from German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s work. Miuccia, who is an admier of the simple and the mundane, was drawn to Fassbinder’s portrayals of the “less fancy” — a peculiar inspiration for a luxury fashion house.
⠀
The two seemingly-opposite inspirations are intertwined in a dystopian manner, dressing models into extravagant outfits with utilitarian elements.
⠀
Shearling is a common motif in this show, featured in several looks as a statement piece. One of the looks even presents a shearling coat crafted out of nylon — Prada’s signature material. While some garments are in a bright monochromatic palette of reds, purples, yellows, and some greys, other looks present rowdy Art Deco-inspired patterns.
⠀
Heavily referencing not just the early 20th century movements, but also some of her earlier work, these patterned garments are combined with flowing dresses, made of sheer silk or satin. However, the collection adheres to strict geometry, adding contrasting piping and straps that maintain the garments’ (especially the dresses’ and the coats’) rectangular shapes.
⠀
A standout from this collection is the footwear. Wedges are the centre of attention, presented as heels with intricate platform details or as chunky boots that resemble skyscrapers from the “Metropolis” film. Simple geometry that’s made to look so clean and luxurious!
⠀
The Prada FW 2014 is exciting to explore in a sense that it’s rife with references not just to Prada’s past work, but also to various inspirations beyond it. And even 10 years later, this collection provides us with plenty of inspiration for current-day fashion.
