Peak 90s minimalism — as executed by Miuccia Prada
If there’s a brand that nails 90s minimalism…
⠀
…it would most certainly be Prada of the late 90s.
⠀
The 1998 saw two very similar collections from Prada — SS 1998 and FW 1998 both echoed each other, showcasing similar yet different pieces on the runway.
⠀
This reel focuses on Prada FW 1998, which presented garments in thicker fabrics, typically arranged in monochromatic looks. The color palette focused on primary colors — dark blues, bright reds, ivory whites, and of course, black. Only a few garments showcased patterns, which is unlike an average Prada collection that’s rife with patterns.
⠀
The cuts were classic, almost conservative. Yet, Prada plays with this notion by using slits, cuts, and panelling, subverting the expectations of what a regular suit would look like: skirts featured high slits, tops were crafted of panels through which you could see the models’ skin, longer coats were buttoned only at the top exposing bare abdomen.
⠀
Some garments were adorned by sequins that glistened under the bright light, providing intricate contrast to the dark fabrics. However in general, decoration was modest and a greater focus fell on tailoring and styling.
⠀
This collection is peak 90s minimalism that Prada executed so well, that it remains relevant and wearable to this day.
