Why is Miu Miu SS 1998 so personal to Miuccia Prada?

The Miu Miu SS1998 collection is one that’s deeply personal to Miuccia Prada.

In 1995, it was recorded Prada, her husband and her team discussing how fun it would be to wear all the hippie clothes she wore in the 70s — that’s when someone proposed to produce them in-house.

And so the idea behind the Miu Miu SS1998 ready-to-wear collection was born.

The opening look of the show was a laced corset top, which is reminiscent of Yves Saint Laurent Riche Gauche design of 1977. This top is featured in multiple colours throughout the show — a playful palette of blues, reds, pinks and buttery yellows.

Overall, the show has a very youthful feel. Simple dresses carry appliqués of cherries, hearts, ducks, and hands, almost as if ripped out from a children’s book.

The silhouettes are typically flowy and wide, focusing on comfort. The few suits presented in this collection are in bright, informal colours, such as pink or purple.

Unlike Prada’s main line, which was sticking to strict lines, minimal decoration and a focus on utilitarianism in the late 90s, Miu Miu presents a more playful and eccentric side of Prada.
