Prada FW1994 marks the kick-off of Miuccia Prada’s use of nylon in fashion design, elevating this otherwise-utilitarian fabric to a luxurious status.

The runway show presented a series of garments in nylon or combining nylon with wool and/or leather. Suits, skirts, vests, and coats, crafted of black or navy nylon flooded the first half of the show, reminding us of its utilitarian nature.

Multiple looks presented strict tailoring, with straight lines and rigid elements, such as leather collars or belted waists. We can see this especially in the series of black military-style double-breasted coats and skirt suits.

The minimalism of most of these garments are complemented by the change in textures — be it combining nylon with leather, or wool with fur. That’s why we love Prada; Miuccia Prada never fails to subvert expectations.

Prada FW1994 collection is special in its covert creativity — pushing boundaries and subverting expectations does not always have to be loud. And taking the time to notice this helps us build a greater appreciation for the designer and their garments.
