Four runway looks from the Dolce & Gabbana Spring Summer 2002 ready-to-wear collection

Why we love Dolce & Gabbana’s SS 2002 ready-to-wear show

Early 2000s Dolce & Gabbana is absolutely unmatched when it comes to iconic tailoring and fashion-forward decisions. Their SS 2002 ready-to-wear collection epitomised the brand’s signature fusion of classic tailoring and daring sexuality.

Meticulously tailored jackets and tight corseted dresses were juxtaposed with vibrant, floral-print chiffon dresses and flowing blouses.

Accessories also played a pivotal dole, with metallic logo belts, gold pendants, and earrings spelling out “Dolce” and “Gabbana” — a tame predecessor to the “SEX” accessories from the brand’s later collection.

A personal highlight of mine are all of the corseted garments, laced-up by thick white or black laces.

The transition from strict tailoring to more playful and eclectic elements of the early 2000s is clearly seen in the show. As this era embraced bold use of colour and print, Dolce & Gabbana reflect this in their use of florals and abstract prints — some very closely resembling those of Paco Rabanne.

Overall, the combination of classics with the more wild styles reflects a growing desire for versatility in womenswear. While Dolce & Gabbana are not exactly “office-friendly”, their garments offer plenty of opportunity to be dressed up or down, depending on setting.
